Donato Graduation Dinner 2016

On February 10, 2016, the Donato Academy of Hairstyling and Aesthetics graduated yet another terrific group of individuals! It was a fabulous night filled with great food, big laughs and incredible people!

This group was particularly special as they were part of  a huge transitional period for the Academy as we moved from our former Lakeshore Boulevard location in Toronto to Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga, ON. With commitment and perseverance, everyone stayed focused on their career goals and did not skip a beat when it came to attendance and overall practical performance.

The requirements for becoming a Hairstylist have changed greatly over the years. Grade 10 used to be a minimum requirement to enter a  Cosmetology program whereas now you need a grade 12 diploma or equivalent.  A standard Cosmetology program recognized by the Ministry of Training and Education requires a student to accumulate a minimum of 1500 training hours in order to receive a diploma from the college. After receiving the diploma the graduate must now seek out an apprenticeship position in a salon. In the province of Ontario a Hairstyling apprentice is required to complete a 2000 hour apprenticeship, however, this can also be completed based on competency. Some salons may or may not offer a post-beauty school training program.

Donato Salon and Spa offers a post-beauty school training program called New Talent. Once registered with the Ontario College of Trades, our apprentices begin by assisting 2 to 3 days per week in one of our locations and are trained by industry professionals behind the chair as stylists/colourists 2 to 3 days per week. After successfully completing the 12 month New Talent program, the apprentice will then be given the opportunity to begin at Donato Salon and Spa as a Salon level 1 or Colour Technician, entry level positions. Upon completion of an apprenticeship or apprenticeship hours, all registered Hairstyling apprentices are required to write a licensing exam with the province of Ontario.

We are excited to begin the New Talent program with our graduates, and for those who are pursuing other endeavors within the industry, we wish you the very best for your futures! Cheers to your success!
