April 20 2012, Braids are the buzz, a must-have addition to formal styling with the prom-age gals this season. Some of the most popular styles of braid include the Waterfall Braid, Snake Braid and the daring Butterfly Braid. Tutorials have flooded the youtube seen and have gone viral as tweens to teens seek out the hottest spring/summer look. These looks are expected to be seen this season at graduation dinners and prom nights everywhere. Braids have also transcended to brides and bridesmaids this wedding season as formal styling meets soft texture and braided accents. Additionally, an elegant floral accessory or beaded jewel can be used to accent and dress up any braided hairstyle. Braids appear to be here to stay and are a simple way to complement any look for almost any occasion.

Humber “Walk It Out” Fashion Show

April 3, 2012 – The spring season has been a busy one at The Donato Academy! For the third consecutive year, the students were given the honour to participate in The Humber College “Walk It Out” Fashion Show, planned, organized and hosted by the school’s fourth semester fashion art’s students. Walk It Out is an incredibly well produced show that is just as flawless and impressive as runway shows by seasoned veterans. This year the team further impressed by having breath-taking designs provided by luxury retailer Tocca Finita, including pieces by Canadian designers Joeffer Caoc, Wayne Clark, Lucian Matis and Marie Saint Pierre. In the weeks before the show, The Donato Academy team prepared for the fashion show by learning various techniques of using hair extensions in order to create identical long, sleek ponytail hairstyles for all of the models. The students also were able to experience the backstage chaos of a runway show, only having a few seconds to touch up hair in between outfit changes. Academy Educator, Alexandra Dalla Via was quoted saying,” The results were incredible. All of the hair was stunning and as I watched the final evening show, I overheard several guests saying how it was astonishing all the work was executed by students. This comment reiterated the progress and success of our Donato Academy goal of graduating salon ready stylists!”

Academy Students Support MIAG “Diversity in Style” Event

On Saturday March 24 2012, Donato Academy Students put their styling skills to the test as they went to create all of the hairstyles for MIAG’s annual “Diversity in Style.” MIAG Centre for Diverse Women & Families has a mission to “enhance the inclusion and development of diverse communities through empowerment, innovation and partnerships.” The event always features several aspiring fashion designers from across the GTA, and this year The Donato Academy was able to have creative control of the hairstyles. The team had a wonderful time collaborating with the designers and learning about their clothing to achieve natural, beautiful looks for every model, of every ethnicity. “It was really fun to style hair in a fast-paced environment back stage, we got to experience working in teams to finish everything. The best part was each model had a different look and hair type, no two models were the same!” – Stephanie, Academy Student.

Donato Styles Hair for Mackage Label at Fashion Week 2012

Wednesday March 7, 2012 – Donato Salon + Spa sponsors the hair in support of Mackage show at the Distillery District’s Fermenting Cellar for Fashion Week.

“The event was both a party and a show”, reads torontolife.com. The attendees enjoyed buttered popcorn, cotton candy and mini ice cream sandwiches with a circus feel as performers paraded through with illuminated hula hoops and walked through on stilts.

Designers Eran Elfassy’s and Elisa Dahan’s revealed the Mackage fall/winter 2012 collection showcasing jackets that featured interesting textures with fur accents, and cable-knit layers made of boucle fabric on top of nylon. The collection also showcased female models wearing camel skirts and cigarette pants and collars of contrasting colours like tan, white, red and grey on black. Head-lining models, like Rico “Zombie Boy” Genest, best known for appearance in Lady Gaga video, and Canadian-born Heather Marks, walked the catwalk and captured the attention of fashion reporters and guests alike.

Our team of hairstylists were hard at work as they transformed 20 models, including model Heather Marks, working with the existing wave and texture of the models’ hair creating soft and natural looks that complemented the designers’ reveal.

Donato Team Sponsors Hair for Lovas Show FW 2012

Tuesday March 6, 2012 – Designer Badanjak for Lovas revealed ombre tweed, micro chenille coats and cobweb knits at 99 Sudbury Street for Fashion Week.

A collection of sheer reptilian blouses, two piece jacket and skirt separates and pencil skirts were also seen on the runway. Royal blue accents were also found on some of the pieces including on skirt piping and on hems or seams.

The models hair was “a modern take on the classic beehive with strong centre parting and smooth finished sides”, says Brian, Hair Team Lead from Donato. To achieve this look the stylists used Oribe Dry Texture Spray, Superfine Hairspray and Oribe Soft Lacquer.

Donato Team Styles Hair for Basch Show FW 2012

Tuesday March 6, 2012 – Donato Salon + Spa team sponsors hair for the Basch Show for Toronto Fashion Week happening at 99 Sudbury Street.

“(Designer Wesley) Badanjak veered away – for the most part – from anything too ostentatious”, read torontolife.com. Basch featured mainly wearable cocktail dresses in colours ranging from black, silver and soft pink to bright crimson red.

The Donato Styling Team performed their magic on approximately 15 models as they tightly curled the models hair and brushed it out to create a “softer” texture. Stylists used Oribe Dry Texture Spray for texture and Label m Resurrection Dust for lift and volume; creating the desired unkempt curl with sleek centre parting.

Donato Yorkdale partners with Holt Renfrew for Fashion Event

February 09, 2012, Toronto – Kudos to the Donato Yorkdale team for their support and hairstyling talents demonstrated at the Holt Renfrew Yorkdale VIP fashion event. Stylists created sleek, classic looks that complemented the models that sashayed down the promenade wearing the latest Spring/Summer 2012 collections. Designers featured the likes of Gucci, Prada, Vince, and Marc Jacobs to name a few. The turnout was amazing and the consensus on the completed looks, including the beautiful bright colours of the upcoming season complemented by the simplistic hair styles, was a hands-down jaw dropper. Keep your eyes out for Spring/Summer’s bold expressions and beautiful palettes of yellows, reds, and pinks; just the right antidote to combat the winter blahs.
